Graffiti

“Graffiti is one of the few tools you have if you have almost nothing. And even if you don’t come up with a picture to cure world poverty you can make someone smile while they’re having a piss.”
Banksy

Graffiti, love it or hate it, it’s all over, from Banksy to kids with marker pens, it’s in our world. I’m a lover of good graff, I hate pointless tags. There are 2 extremes in Burley, where I work, commercial pieces on shops and walls and then the park fence is covered in less ‘interesting’ work. What comes to mind however is that when I look across the park, I see that given the right work, on those fences, it would look great.

I wonder how the community would feel? I suppose I will go ask them.

Thanks for looking.

Walking with the kids.

‘Family is the most important thing in the world.’
Princess Diana

I love walking in the woods with my kids and the dog. None of which really like having their picture taken, they are too busy in the mud, running around or climbing trees (not the dog); so I busied myself with shooting the trees and the water. Taking in the beauty and capturing it. Most of these are 9 shot HDRs, shot with Magic Lantern, edited in photomatix and finished in CS5.

Humber Bridge and Cemex

‘I think that my ideas of the world are that it’s random and cruel but kind of quite comical really, and therefore the humour, in a sense, springs from that.’
Alexei Sayle

Time for a road trip I said, new job, need some easy fun I said, OK Andy and Jonno said, if only it was that easy!

The sunset from the Humber Bridge was ace, beautiful. Many HDR fails as the clouds were moving too fast BIT the edits of the single shots came out great!

No trouble there then.

On to Cemex. Just walked around the back, across a footpath, across a field. Happily chilling taking long exposures, all was bliss…. then we started to notice a helicopter circling, couldn’t be for us, not a chance….well an hour later and YES it was for us! 3 cops and a chopper, joy.

It was nice to see how chilled the cops were, no worries, stop check and moved my car. He even pointed out my tax had just ran out and to get it done, no fine, whoop!

Then it fell apart.

It goes a little like this.

Cop ‘How long have you had the car?’

Me ‘6 months maybe..’

Cop ‘Do any other males drive it?’

Me ‘No’

Cop ‘So you definitely were driving it last month?’

Me ‘Yes’

Cop ‘Well in that case I am going to have to arrest and hold you for the night, it was involved in a drive off in West Yorkshire and we need to sort it out’

Me ‘Shit’ (Jaw hitting the floor, I can only imagine my face seeing as the beardy pair looked completely shocked!)

About 15 seconds of stunned jaw flapping later, the cop cracked up.

Cop ‘Gotcha, that’ll teach you to make me walk half a mile across a muddy field!’

Me ‘Fek you barstweard!’

Lots of relieved lols later, of he went laughing his head off.

Moral of the story, cops can be OK, but seriously MEAN!

Thanks for reading, here’s the pics!

103,545 people on Facebook like “I hate benefit scrounging work shy bastards.”

What separates them from benefit claimants? One event beyond their control.

One departmental downsizing

One ruptured blood vessel

One car accident that you couldn’t prevent

One expected baby born with an unexpected disability

One company that suddenly tumbles into receivership

One slip, one trip, one fall on the ice, the rug, the pavement, the stairs, the shower

One bereavement you couldn’t get over

One rolling contract not renewed this financial year

One frail elderly parent you cannot bear to be cared for by strangers

One faulty gene triggered into rapid action

One unscrupulous employer who learns you are pregnant

One partner who was supposed to be “too young” for dementia

One paid job now done by an unpaid intern

One medical image confirming the worst

One mental health breakdown you never saw coming

One pension fund that didn’t…

Newsome- Where time stands still – August -2012

‘I’ve found that luck is quite predictable. If you want more luck, take more chances. Be more active. Show up more often.’
Brian Tracy

Being lucky enough to find a place to explore at fist visit is good, being persistent enough to keep returning until you can get in is better!

It just so happens that i used to pass Newsome Mill 3 or so times a week and now I don’t so much. I have had my eye on the clock tower for ages…. So when Dean the Ferret said there was access, off we went, JT in tow, to go look!

I wasn’t disappointed! The mill was founded in 1827 and was in use as a textile mill until 1983. Alongside the beautiful clock tower, there is also another of my favourite features in derelict mills, worn stone steps. Many 1000s of feet must have walked the stairs to wear them down over the 156 year period the mill was open!

Locals would like to see the clock tower brought back into use, but sadly, I can’t see this happening soon. Their site is http://newsomemill.wordpress.com/mill/.

Anyway, I do wish I had a wider lens than my 18-55 kit, the shots would have been amazing! However, I

worked with what I had, Photoshop and Nik Efex for the HDRs!

Thanks for looking,

Castle Hill Fun!

‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’
William Butler Yeats

There could not be a more apt quote for tonight! JT (as usual) Charles (yes, I mean you LOL) and my eldest, my daughter Riley and I went for a play in the dark on one of my favourite haunts. Castle Hill, Huddersfield.

On top of Castle Hill sits Victoria Tower, a tower Riley has climbed lots while I fly my kite….. but tonight was different, she came as part of the camera crew and she did brilliantly! Shot some of her own long exposures, was the light painter in a few of mine and even sheltered behind a brolly for the wire wool shots!

So the quote.. Apt because of the fire but much more importantly, lighting the fire of photography in my daughter, brilliant!

I am very proud of my girl.

Kirkham Priory – August- 2012

Friendship… is not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.
Muhammad Ali

A jaunt out into the North Yorkshire countryside with JT (as usual), a man who resembles a famous chef and goes by the code name JKM (or by his native argwotdafu ggwozzatt name which roughly translates to he who is ambushed by gazebos) and Buddy the dog came for the ride too. Spending time with 2 of the people who I feel most close to was great, JKM because he is always there with sage advice and helps me through the dark (whether he knows so or not) and JT because when it is dark, he’s always a bit too close to me for my liking.

Great food, great company, brilliant scenery and the weather broke just as we arrived to photograph Kirkham Priory. The Priory was founded in the 1120s with a gatehouse dating from the late 13th Century. There isn’t a lot left now but there was definitely enough there  to combine with some beautiful weather to shoot happily. I combined some HDR with some low dof 50mm prime shots, edited in Nik Efex and Photoshop.

Anyway, thanks for looking.
